Author Walidah Imarisha will be doing public readings, presentations and workshops.
TYPES OF EVENTS:Reading: The author will read an excerpt from the book, and then engage in question and answer with the audience about prisons, crime, alternatives to incarceration, and accountability.
Presentation: The author will give a larger presentation about the history of prisons as well as alternatives to incarceration, situating her own process writing the book in that larger context. The author will also engage in question and answer with the audience.
“Beyond Bars” workshop: This interactive workshop has participants explore what they know (or what they think they know) about the prison system, and then explores frameworks and concrete examples of alternatives to incarceration.
Writing/Zine Making Workshop: The author will lead participants through a writing exercise where they will explore ideas of prisons, crime, and justice. These writings can also be compiled into a zine to be handed out soon after the workshop, provided the host is able to provide access to a copier and supplies.
Interactive Photo/Video Booth: The author can work with a host to create a photo or video booth space, with a prompt that encourages attendees to think about and express their thoughts around issues of justice, and then take a picture holding up their response. Prompt can be created in collaboration with host. This activity is best done in conjunction with one of the other events.
