Created by Casey Rocheteau in 2014, the Shrine of the Black Medusa (SBM) celebrates Black culture and history, queer magic & hoodoo divination. One essential tool of the Shrine is the Black Medusa Tarot deck, which helps guide decisions about the future crafted using multimedia collaged images from the past. The mission of the Shrine of the Black Medusa is to connect people and ideas across generations and geographies & create tools and objects that represent and uplift Black people. SBM is rooted in an understanding that many practices from the African continent were lost through the slavery, and that malicious uprooting of culture creates a need to uncover our past and create new tools for understanding our present conditions.
SBM is currently engaged in organizing the Fortify Writers’ Retreat in Detroit, facilitating workshops based around the Shrine of the Black Medusa Tarot, working with A.gency a Detroit based advertising experiment, as well as playwriting and poetry writing.
