The Rooted Collective is a liberatory gathering of Black LGBTQ people to define, dream, and expand on the ways in which we heal from oppression and practice joy and pleasure. We root our work in the knowledge that healing for all Black people is political resistance.
For the past three years, our collective has come together to explore practices of healing justice within Black LGBTQ spaces. The collective is comprised of nine active members: all Black, queer, same gender loving (SGL) and/or trans people who are rooted in Baltimore City through their activism and community building. Rooted centers the leadership of Black trans and non binary healers and elders. We are committed to building healing spaces for Black LGBTQ and same gender loving people that documents our history of resistance and fierce love, while also exploring new ways of being together that are pleasurable and joyful. At the core of our work is a radical commitment to building healing and loving cultural rituals that celebrate the tremendous and powerful practice of love and resistance that Black LGBTQ people continue to hold dear.
Critical activities include hosting gatherings for Black LGBTQ community members to meditate on Black queer resistance and healing through art, ritual and celebration. We have partnered with the Center for Black Equity, the Baltimore Museum of Arts, FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, Luminous Interventions and other groups.
We work to affirm, support and promote Black LGBTQ/SGL liberation by creating events that foster Black love in Baltimore.
