PNK 4 Puerto Rico
RJT and Resilient Networks NYC partner The Point will be organizing a two-day Portable Network Kits training in San Juan, Puerto Rico from Thursday, September 6 - Friday, September 7th, 2018 at El Hormiguero - Centro Social Autogestionado from 10 am - 4 pm for community organizers and community technologists. Space is limited and must be reserved in advance. For more information please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
A Portable Network Kit (PNK) is a collection of off-the-shelf consumer hardware that can be configured easily to make your own local Wi-Fi network. When you have at least one connection to the Internet, such as a working Ethernet cable or mobile tower, the kit can share that connection out so multiple people can use it to access the Internet. When there is no connection to the Internet, the kit can work in island mode, sharing services and content from a local server, allowing community members to send and receive messages, share files, and information using their cell phones or computers.
- Delivered the first two Portable Network Kits to Santurce, San Juan - November 9, 2017
- Trained (so far) 5 Puerto Rican residents who are prepared to set up PNK on the island in partnership with local orgs
- Developed easily assembled and configured kits that can be rapidly deployed either for local networks/content or as internet gateways where possible
If you are interested in donating equipment and/or money to fund a decentralized network in Puerto Rico please donate.
