Register Now for Co.Open Workshops: Mapping, Electronic Music, Website Management

Are you a media maker looking to learn new skills? Do you want to grow your expertise in mapping, beatmaking or website management? Registration is now open for Co.Open workshops in August! Co.Open is a media-making cooperative that provides design services, training, and professional development for freelancers and media makers in Detroit.

Classes offered include “Data, Mapping and Research Justice”, “Electronic Music Production”, and “Wordpress Content Management and Maintenance”. All classes are open to beginners, but Electronic Music Production and Wordpress are especially geared towards intermediate level learners. Each workshop meets one day a week for four weeks in August. Workshops are held at Allied Media Projects offices at 4126 Third St. in Detroit.

Class sizes are being kept small so seats are limited. Register today at the AMP Store. The deadline to register is July 31, 2015 August 3 at 3pm and the cost to register is $100 per four-week workshop. If you have questions about the Co.Open workshops, email janel@coopen.co.

Data

Data, Mapping and Research Justice

Maps and data can be used to better understand where inequality exists, to look at possible correlations between environmental risk factors, or even to visualize community responses to social issues. Working within the framework of research justice, we will be using open source tools to learn about and work with maps and data. Our goal will be to successfully understand equitable data collection, data management, and basic map visualization techniques. Do you want to use maps and data to further your social justice cause? Then this is the course for you!

Instructor: Alex Hill

Alex was trained in social justice movement building by the Movement Strategy Center and has supported the efforts of numerous social justice oriented causes. He is currently a Project Coordinator at a Wayne State University research center and brings 5+ years of experience in GIS, mapping, and conducting research. Music

Electronic Music Production

Register for this workshop.

This class will focus on electronic music production. In this class we will explore computer software, midi controllers, tape recorders and electronic hardware instruments. Using these tools, we will attempt to break down a wide range of methods used in electronic music production. Take this class if you are interested in understanding how different electronic musical styles are made on a theoretical and practical level. This is an intermediate level course, so some fundamental experience or knowledge is desired from participants, but not essential.

Instructor: Ben Christensen

Ben is a Detroit based musician and producer. He composes music for TV, Film, animations and advertisements. He has taught electronic music with Youthville Detroit, Detroit Future Schools and Detroit Future Media. You might see him around town deejaying your favorite sets.
 

Wordpress

Wordpress Content Management and Maintenance

Wordpress is a multifaceted tool that can bring your business, organization or classroom to the next level. In this workshop you will learn the basics of updating and managing your Wordpress site. By the end of the workshop you will know have a completed workflow for managing your site which includes: backing up and updating your site, discovering and managing new plugins, managing and understanding posts and pages, social media and site analytics. This workshop is perfect for anyone who already has a Wordpress site up and running but wants to learn how to maintain and make minor updates to their existing site. Come with projects/problems in mind and learn how to bring your site to the next level.

Instructor: Janel Yamashiro

Janel loves exploring and creating human centered solutions and specializes in designing interactive experiences for online and off. She’s worked with media and community organizations in web development/design, curriculum design, content & learning management systems and media-making. Her community partners have included Inside Southwest, Allied Media Projects and FoodLab Detroit. During the day she works as the lead UX researcher at DTE Energy for mobile and web apps.
