The DiscoTech model spreads worldwide

The DiscoTech (short for "Discovering Technology") event was inspired by the Allied Media Conference Media Lab and developed by the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition as a space to learn about the impact and possibilities of technology within our communities. The DiscoTech model has spread beyond Detroit, through sessions at the Allied Media Conference and through the publication of the "How To DiscoTech" zine. This Friday, the Codesign Studio of the MIT Center for Civic Media brings the DiscoTech to an impressively diverse range of locations: San Francisco; Karachi, Pakistan; Bangalore, India; Ramallah, Palestine; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mexico City; Boston, and New York City. The theme of this series of DiscoTechs is counter-surveillance.

DiscoTechs are events that feature interactive, multimedia workshops designed to demystify, engage and inform the community about issues of Internet use and ownership, providing the tools allowing communication to be more easily recognized as a fundamental human right.

We are extremely geeked about the Codesign Studio's plans for a multi-site, international DiscoTech this Friday, February 28.

Check out the annoucement:

The MIT Codesign Studio team is organizing, hosting, participating in, and supporting several countersurveillance DiscoTechs (short for "Discovering Technology") March 1st and 2nd.

Our countersurveillance DiscoTechs are free, open, multi-site events, with confirmed locations in Boston, San Francisco, Palestine, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Bangalore, Karachi and additional locations TBA (as well as online).

If you'd like to organize your own countersurveillance DiscoTech get in touch with us. Email Willow at bl00{at]media.mit.edu.

Cool! What’s a DiscoTech?

Our DiscoTechs follow the model developed by the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition:

A DiscoTech is a community-based, community-organized, multimedia workshop and fair. At a DiscoTech, participants learn more about the impacts and possibilities of technology, and take part in fun, interactive and media-based workshops. DiscoTech workshops are designed to demystify technology and create a space where we can inform and engage our community [...] A DiscoTech utilizes the unique skills and expertise within each community, and morphs to adapt to changing needs. Awesome! How can I participate?

Come to one of the DiscoTechs, join us online (at freenode.net, channel #codesignstudio), or organize your own! If you’d like to organize your own countersurveillance DiscoTech, hackathon, or event, we’ll be happy to share our approach, link to your event, and otherwise support you.
