Welcome DFM Class of 2013!
Detroit Future Media, a program offered by Allied Media Projects, has launched it's third year of media-based community organizing workshops in Detroit. Fifty-five participants were selected out of dozens of applications to develop Major Media Projects that will investigate a problem or set of problems, explore holistic solutions and foster transformative relationships in the process.
DFM3 was built through a participatory process that responds directly to evaluation from alumni of the previous two iterations of the program.
Classes are led by 15 instructors and 6 teaching assistants who are local and national artists, media-makers, entrepreneurs, teachers and technologists. Each has gone through months of training, curriculum preparation and course development, working with AMP staff to ensure their pedagogy and classroom content aligns with the Network Principles that guide our work.
DFM3 provides resources and instruction to support each participant's vision. It also creates a home for Detroit media-makers to make personal and professional connections. Detroiters of all ages and backgrounds use Detroit Future Media to collectively invest in projects that ultimately contribute to a more just, creative and collaborative Detroit. Classes incorporate participants of all ages and levels of experience and are designed to be hands-on.
I'm excited because DFM is a rare opportunity in Detroit. There's a lot of talk about the future here. Being in DFM, especially starting from year one as an O.G. Detroit Futurist until now as a Teaching Assistant has allowed me to put my money where my mouth is. I started as a DFM student in the first year of DFM and then was selected as a Teaching Assistant for the Web class. I also had the opportunity to become a teaching artist in the Detroit Future Schools program. This experience has changed the whole way I engage with the city. If DFM3's participants are going to transform the way that I did...BOOM. Watch out world.
