This summer, MEJC was successful in pressuring the State of Michigan to define Environmental Justice in moving the needle for EJ Communities.
MEJC has seen major wins in its partnerships with community action. In partnership with the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, MEJC defeated a 250 MW Natural Gas Plant proposed by Dearborn Industrial Generation in January 2018.
Under pressure from MEJC and other EJ activists, the City of Detroit passed a long-stalled bulk storage ordinance in November 2017. The bulk storage ordinance is a historic protection for human health against petroleum coke and other toxic bulk materials. MEJC also helped empower residents of Dearborn to unanimously defeat a proposal for the expansion of a steel slag processing company.
MEJC has also seeded work to better air quality and community health outcomes in Detroit through the Clean Air Council. The Clean Air Council connects 13 community-based activists with community experts and knowledgeable scholars for an 8-month session with hands-on, technical information about environmental health, environmental racism and the Clean Air Act.
