Motor City Street Dance Academy works to enhance the lives of Detroiters through hip-hop, physical activity and healthy living. Our purpose is grounded to uplift the disenfranchised communities in Detroit, much like the way the pioneers of hip-hop did decades ago. We mentor the youth and provide a safe space for them to express themselves.
Our main method of working with youth is S.E.E.D. (Spreading the Elements Everywhere in Detroit), a program that focuses on the dance elements of hip hop including Break Dancing. S.E.E.D. connects youth in middle school, high school, and college to each other and to professionals. The network functions to lower social anxiety, and as a means to practice mentorship and teaching skills (i.e. the high school youth passing down what they were taught to middle school students). We connect youth to each other through events, competitions, panels, workshops, and video shoots. Since its conception in 2015 S.E.E.D. has created 8 different dance crews in Southwest Detroit.
