Now Hiring: Landscape Architect for the Create NED Initiative

AMP is hiring a Landscape Architect to support the Create NED initiative, a collaborative project with the Restore Northeast Detroit (Restore NED) Coalition, made possible through a grant from ArtPlace.

Over the next 18 months, Create NED will activate residents to utilize art, design, and technology to make their neighborhood visions tangible and shareable with the broader public.

About the Landscape Architect Position

The Landscape Architect will work closely with the leadership of the Restore NED Coalition, and with local design firm, The Work Department, to lead a participatory park design process with Northeast Detroit residents. The Landscape Architect will oversee the implementation of one public art and landscape architecture project in each of three city parks and will advise on the land-use strategies for District 3 as a whole. The scale of each park project will vary based on available space, but may include: planting strategies, seating design, historical markers and signage, green technologies, and playscapes.

The Landscape Architect will report to the Executive Director of Allied Media Projects. The position will be housed jointly out of the Allied Media Projects office in the Cass Corridor and the Nortown CDC office in Northeast Detroit.

This is a contract position with the expectation of approximately 300 hours of work over 18 months, from November 1, 2015 to February 28, 2017. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Participate in collaborative design workshops with Create NED partners and Northeast Detroit residents. The goal of these workshops will be to generate plans for beautiful, relevant, and sustainable park upgrades that serve to bring community members together.
  • Contribute technical expertise and creative vision to the finalization of park plans.
  • Seek the most cost-effective solutions and work within the allocated budget for each park project.
  • Procure necessary supplies for implementation work days.
  • Oversee and coordinate the implementation of these designs, in partnership with residents between April and October, 2016.
  • Consult Northeast Detroit residents on plans for small scale vacant land adaptations, funded through the Create NED mini-grant program.
  • Review and provide feedback on the visionary land-use plans created by Restore NED in 2012.
  • Help make necessary revisions to those plans in preparation for incorporating them into the City of Detroit’s Masterplan.

Qualifications

  • Three years field experience, preferably in collaborative community-based contexts.
  • Experience with human-centered and participatory design methods.
  • Experience with public park design, including planting strategies, seating design, playscapes, water management strategies.
  • Familiarity with green technologies such as solar lighting.
  • Ability to define innovative solutions that build and synthesize diverse ideas within practical constraints.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software and other graphic tools that will help residents visualize possibilities and communicate ideas. (i.e. SketchUp, Adobe CS, CAD).
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in landscape architecture.
