Decoding the News: Learn how to cut through the noise to find what matters most to you and your community. Participants are trained in media literacy with an eye toward choosing trustworthy sources of news and information and analyzing coverage for veracity, bias and usefulness.
Seeing, Listening, Telling: What does it mean to report a story? Explore the nuts and bolts of developing an idea, choosing sources, conducting interviews and putting it all together to create a piece of original reporting. McClain will also share how to decide where you want your article published and how to write a compelling pitch to make that happen.
Finding Your Voice: This workshop focuses on writing commentary. Want your take on what the school board just decided or the latest police shooting to travel beyond your immediate circle? Participants will learn how to move from having an emotional response to breaking news to constructing a passionate, well-researched op-ed that allows you to share your opinion with a broad audience. McClain will also share how to decide where you want your op-ed published and how to write a compelling pitch to make that happen.
