About

Comfrey Films is a Film Training Program and Production House designed to launch Black trans youth (ages 18-35) into the film industry and tell stories woven at the intersection of being Black and Trans.

We have a simple mission: to train the next generation of Black trans storytellers and filmmakers, to leverage our brand to get Black trans filmmakers paid projects in their communities, and to pay Black trans trainees to work on Comfrey Films projects that further the stories of Black trans people globally.

Black Trans people in our local communities are both explicitly and implicitly discriminated against while trying to find employment. We, either have to sacrifice our gender and humanity for employment or we exist in work environments that are degrading to our humanity.

Comfrey Films is creating work spaces that prioritize our freedom of expression, creativity, and center our experience as community leaders in racial and gender justice. We are reclaiming our right to choose the things that we do for work, our right to self-determine, and our right to dignity as human beings. Comfrey Films is a direct intervention into one of the main barriers to survival for Black Trans people here in North Carolina.

Support Comfrey Films!

Comfrey Films is raising $30,000 through December 31, 2025! Right now, Black and trans bodies are being weaponized in public discourse, used as symbols in battles over voting rights, bodily autonomy, education, immigration, and civil liberties. These aren’t rhetorical skirmishes — they are coordinated political strategies. When lies, stereotypes, and sensationalized portrayals dominate the media landscape, public consent is manufactured for policies that harm communities and silence the millions of voices calling for safety, dignity, and freedom for all.

That’s why we invest in storytellers who can tell the truth with clarity, depth, and humanity. For millennia, Black TGNCI people have been the ones to create our own systems of care and safety, making it possible for future generations of our community to exist and live with dignity.

We’re raising $30,000 right now to ensure our work continues to thrive. Every dollar invested now allows Comfrey Films to respond quickly, document critical moments as they unfold, and amplify narratives that would otherwise go unheard.
